Today has been a sad day in the evangelical world but another joyous day in the portals of Heaven. Today Dr. D. James Kennedy stepped from this mortal life into an immortal life to be surrounded by the glory and majesty of his Lord.
As a boy, when I would spend Saturday night at my grandpa’s and grandma’s house, we would rise on Sunday morning to begin getting ready for church. Often I would hear the voice of Dr. D. James Kennedy ringing through the house. The choir of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church would begin the service with hymns of praise in a way that sounded so worshipful and glorious. Then Dr. Kennedy would ascend to the lofty pulpit, open the Scripture, and for an hour expound the glories, beauties and demands of Holy Scripture.
Out of all the ministries, programs and schools he founded. Out of all the millions of people worldwide who tuned into the Coral Ridge Hour each week. Out of the countless seminary students, ministry students, young preachers, old preachers and not-yet preachers he impacted with his integrity, godliness, character and commitment. One thing stands supreme in the life and legacy of Dr. D. James Kennedy, he was a lover of Jesus Christ. His whole life was dedicated to the advance of the Kingdom of Christ. He sought in his life and ministry to demonstrate the love, beauty, supremacy, glory and sufficiency of the Lord Jesus Christ in all things. In numerous pulpits around the world, on television, on radio, in countless seminaries and colleges, in the halls of congress, Dr. Kennedy had one focus in mind – the glory of Jesus Christ.
I thank the Lord for the life, legacy and ministry of Dr. D. James Kennedy and will be in much prayer for his family as they celebrate a life lived for the Kingdom of Christ.
“Now, I know that someday I am going to come to what some people will say is the end of this life. They will probably put me in a box and roll me right down here in front of the church, and some people will gather around, and a few people will cry. But I have told them not to do that because I don’t want them to cry. I want them to begin the service with the Doxology and end with the Hallelujah chorus, because I am not going to be there, and I am not going to be dead. I will be more alive than I have ever been in my life, and I will be looking down upon you poor people who are still in the land of dying and have not yet joined me in the land of the living. And I will be alive forevermore, in greater health and vitality and joy than ever, ever, I or anyone has known before.”
